Following Huntingdonshire District Council’s declaration of a Climate and Ecological Emergency in 2023, the Climate Strategy [PDF, 4MB] has guided the council’s ambitious journey towards becoming a net zero carbon council by 2040. Recognising that community engagement is essential in addressing climate change, HDC hosts an annual Climate Conversation - an essential platform for reflection, learning, and collaboration.

On 6 November 2024, Huntingdonshire’s climate stakeholders came together for the second Climate Conversation Conference, reinforcing a shared commitment to a sustainable future. The event provided an opportunity for networking, project showcases, and knowledge sharing, delivering a powerful message: our community believes in a thriving, sustainable Huntingdonshire.

Key takeaways:

  • HDC’s path to net zero - successes, challenges, and upcoming initiatives

  • Individual action and barrier to achieving sustainability

  • Sustainable procurement and green criteria

  • Insights from other councils’ climate strategies

  • Retrofit projects - the benefits and incentives for local participation.

This insightful session highlighted the importance of individual action, with 60% of the changes needed for net zero by 2050 relying on shifts in lifestyle and consumer choices. Attendees learned about Cambridge Carbon Footprint’s (CCF) expanding homeowner-led tours, showcasing practical sustainability measures.
