Decarbonisation work is now underway at two Huntingdonshire District Council buildings after the council received funding to reduce CO2 emissions.
HDC secured a grant of £3.8 million from the Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy through the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme operated by Salix.
The work at One Leisure Ramsey includes the removal of all gas services, installation of an insulated sports hall roof, replacement of windows, ceiling and cavity wall insulation, LED lighting throughout and a new air source heat pump.
Works at the council’s offices in Huntingdon will see new low energy LED lighting, installation of a more efficient heating and ventilating system, and the upgrade of the building energy management software system to improve overall energy efficiency. The works at both buildings are expected to complete by Spring 2022.
Councillor Marge Beuttell, Executive Councillor for Operations and Environment at Huntingdonshire District Council, said: “This grant funding allows us to continue moving away from traditional fossil-fuel heating systems to make our buildings more energy-efficient and reduce our carbon output.
“It’s important that we do all we can to reduce our carbon footprint so we are hoping to secure further funding as this will result in greener, low-cost buildings for us and more importantly fewer carbon emissions for the planet.”
Councillor Keith Prentice, Executive Councillor for Leisure and Regulatory Services at Huntingdonshire District Council, said: “This funding will make a huge difference to One Leisure Ramsey as it allows us to modernise the facilities and make them more energy-efficient to reduce the impact on the environment. I look forward to seeing the finished result and I’m sure everyone who uses One Leisure Ramsey will as well.”
