Huntingdonshire District Council (HDC) is pleased to announce that work has officially begun on the refurbishment and expansion of the Priory Centre in St Neots.
This project is a key part of the Market Towns Programme (MTP), an ambitious initiative designed to revitalise town centres, boost economic growth, enhance visitor experiences, and ensure long-term sustainability.
With planning permission secured last autumn and a £1.95 million contribution from St Neots Town Council (SNTC), HDC and SNTC have worked in close partnership with architects AOC and contractor SEH French Ltd to develop an ambitious vision for the centre’s future.
As construction begins, the Priory Centre is set to become a modern, welcoming, and dynamic hub, offering an expanded range of cultural, social, and community activities in a vastly improved setting. This investment will create a venue that meets the needs of residents, businesses, and visitors alike.
Executive Councillor for Economy, Regeneration and Housing, Cllr Sam Wakeford, said: "This marks an exciting moment for St Neots. The Priory Centre has been at the heart of the community for years, and this transformation will secure its future for generations to come. We are committed to investing in our market towns, and this project is an example of how we are delivering real, lasting improvements that will benefit local people and businesses."

Cllr Richard Slade, Mayor of St Neots, said: “The transformation of the Priory Centre is fantastic news for St Neots. It will finally offer our local theatre groups the professional space they deserve — complete with tiered seating, modern lighting and AV equipment, a box office, and backstage facilities. It will also be a major asset to the volunteers, charities, and community groups who bring the building to life year-round. As part of the council’s cultural estate — alongside the Market Square, Eatons Centre, St Neots Museum, and the newly acquired Oast House — the Priory Centre reflects our commitment to creativity, community, and preserving our heritage.”
The works are scheduled to take 18 months. View the full plans and updates at The Priory Centre Redevelopment.
