Huntingdonshire District Council (HDC) proudly hosted a celebratory event at Hinchingbrooke Country Park for Ukrainian guests and the local sponsor families supporting them through the Homes for Ukraine scheme.

More than 100 attendees came together for a relaxed and welcoming community barbecue, which featured fun activities including archery, axe throwing and pickleball. The event served as a chance to build connections, reflect on the scheme’s successes, and show appreciation to both guests and the families who have opened their homes.

Huntingdonshire currently has 64 active host families supporting Ukrainian arrivals. Approximately 91 Ukrainian guests are still living with sponsors, while many others have moved on to live independently across the district. This is a testament to the effectiveness of the scheme in helping individuals rebuild their lives and integrate into the community.

Executive Councillor for Communities, Health and Leisure, Cllr Sally Howell commented: "It’s wonderful to see our communities come together to support these families. The strong community spirit on display shows how willing Huntingdonshire residents are to make a difference by becoming sponsors."

The event was fully funded through a government tariff awarded for each new Ukrainian arrival. These funds are designated to support guest wellbeing, promote independence, and cover essential council responsibilities such as home checks and welfare visits.
