We are celebrating the success of the Huntingdonshire Small Electrical Recycling Initiative, launched in April. So far, more than 20 tonnes of unwanted electricals have been collected and recycled.

Residents are reminded that anything with a plug, battery, or cable can be recycled, from kettles and toasters to hairdryers and irons. Items can be dropped off at one of 28 pink street bins across the district.

The scheme is one of over 40 projects funded by Material Focus, the not-for-profit behind the national Recycle Your Electricals campaign. Together, these projects are creating over 400 new collection points and kerbside services for millions of UK households, helping reduce e-waste and its impact on the environment.

Research shows most people support recycling, yet millions of electricals still end up in the bin each year. Many items could be recycled, repaired, or passed on for reuse instead.

"From the start of the Huntingdonshire Small Electrical Recycling project, we’ve been delighted with how engaged and supportive the local community has been, but it is imperative we keep reminding those living locally of the pressing issue of e-waste," said Scott Butler, Executive Director of Material Focus. "Investment into the project from the Electrical Recycling Fund has been instrumental in improving collection and drop-off services and the delivery of new recycling methods, and these will continue to support the overall aim of a more sustainable future, as long as local residents continue to recycle."

This week also marks International E-Waste Day, a global initiative to raise awareness of the growing e-waste challenge and promote responsible disposal of electrical items. We encourage residents to take part by clearing out unused electricals and making use of the district’s pink bin network.
