Huntingdonshire District Council is launching a Reusable Nappy Incentive. Disposable nappies contribute over 1,400 tonnes of waste to landfill every year. This is enough waste to fill 130 refuse vehicles. Disposable nappies also cause contamination when incorrectly disposed of in the recycling bins, accounting for on average 10 tonnes of this waste (a refuse vehicle full) a month.

We have worked with a number of suppliers of reusable nappies to secure a 15% discount on a range of nappies. To be eligible you just need to be a Huntingdonshire resident and have a child of nappy wearing age or be expecting a child.

Executive Councillor for Operations and Environment, Councillor Marge Beuttell, said: "We are really pleased to be able to offer residents an incentive to purchase reusable nappies and increase the waste minimisation drive in Huntingdonshire. This new scheme not only helps the environment by reducing the waste that is sent to landfill but will also save money for new parents in the long run."

A baby would typically be in nappies for an average of two and a half years. Across this time, if disposables are used, they would generate on average two and a half tonnes of waste. If replaced by reusables full-time, this can be brought down to zero, and the nappies can be reused again for siblings, as well as being passed on to friends and family, donated or sold on to others.

There are also financial savings to be had. The typical family would spend on average £650 on disposable nappies from birth to potty trained. Switching to reusables could save around £400. This saving would more than double if used for a second child, or treble for a third child, and further savings can be made if you were to sell the set on once you were finished with it.

Reusables have come a long way and with a variety of different styles, there are options to suit all needs. Many are also made with sustainable and environmental concerns front and centre, opting for more sustainable fabrics and without harmful chemicals.
