Last April, Huntingdonshire District Council committed an additional £20,000 to the Community Chest Grant Scheme funding pot to provide further financial support to local community organisations and projects, assisting local people in their response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

One year on and 48 local organisations have been awarded a combined £49,071 in funding that has allowed projects to begin up and down the district, providing help and support to local communities that have been impacted by the pandemic, such as paying towards staff cover, replenishing stocks of PPE, improving stocks used for food parcels, providing hot meals for vulnerable people and purchasing supermarket vouchers for those in need.

Claudia Deeth, Community Resilience Manager, said: "The District Council has always looked to support local communities, especially through what has been an extremely challenging period of the last 12 months. The Community Chest Grant Scheme was adapted to allow for applications from local organisations and even expanded from the original £30,000 to £50,000 to help more people.

"Generosity has not been in short supply throughout Huntingdonshire over the last 12 months and the Council has stepped in at each opportunity to grant payments of up to £1,000 per project, providing valuable financial support to support a local focus to local issues, identified by local people."

The Community Chest Grant Scheme was changed to allow applications for COVID-related response work in April 2020, with applications considered weekly. Local organisations have been allowed to bid for funding multiple times should their project require additional support, or another project or idea arise, several organisations have therefore been awarded more than one Community Chest Grant. Huntingdonshire District Council will be compiling a look back on the projects, checking in on the success that they have brought to their communities and sharing their stories throughout the coming months on social media and our YouTube channel.
