In determining planning applications, Huntingdonshire District Council is committed to making decisions which it believes are in the best interests of the district and its communities, but needs to balance this against the prudent use of public money.
Following the refusal of permission for up to 199 dwellings and almost 7,000 square metres of business premises on part of land at Riversfield, Great North Road, Little Paxton, an appeal was lodged by the applicants and a Public Inquiry has been scheduled. Having received counsel’s advice on the strength of the council’s case, Cllrs Ablewhite and Conboy are taking a report to the 16 July 2018 Development Management Committee.
The decision to refuse the application was made with the clear intention of protecting employment opportunities and avoiding putting pressure on local schools. However, in order to avoid spending public money on an appeal which legal advice indicates that the council is very likely to lose and have a substantive costs award made against it, the councillors’ report reluctantly recommends that the council confirms that it will not now defend any of the reasons for refusal.
