Taxis (also known as hackney carriages) and their drivers need to be licensed by us.
Taxis are permitted to stand at taxi ranks and pick up passengers in the street, unlike private hire vehicles. They can also be pre-booked.
All taxis must have a meter showing the cost of the journey and a table of fares on display. The fares are set by us following public consultation.
Drivers may not charge more than the amount shown on the meter. If the taxi is pre-booked, the driver must charge the fare quoted to the customer.
Taxis are tested annually. If they pass the test they will be licensed to carry a certain number of passengers - the maximum number permitted is shown on the plate attached to the rear of the vehicle.
Further information on the requirements for taxi licences can be found in the Schedule of Conditions of Licence.
