Street Naming and Numbering is a statutory function of local authorities.

The address of a property is becoming an increasingly important issue. Postal and Emergency Services as well as the general
public need an efficient means of locating and referencing properties. You have a legal obligation to display your house number and it is essential that your address and postcode are correct.

Huntingdonshire District Council has the legal responsibility to prepare street naming and numbering schemes and to maintain
good standards of street name plates, under the provisions of The Public Health Act 1925 Sections 17 - 19 and Towns Improvement Clauses Act 1847, sections 64 and 65.

Street Naming and Numbering

Huntingdonshire District Council is responsible for allocating your property number and street name.
It is imperative that you contact us in the first instance to ensure that your address is completed correctly.
If a property is not officially registered the occupier will find difficulties in obtaining services and postal deliveries. It could also
cause difficulties for the Emergency Services.
We will issue a Street Naming and Numbering plan for each new addressing request and inform Royal Mail who then completes
your full address and issues a postcode.
Upon receipt of your new address plan, you can contact Royal Mail on Tel. 08456 011110 and they will confirm your post town
and postcode. Please note that the District Council does not issue postcodes.

To apply for a new or amended address please select one of the options above and complete our on-line form.

Street Name Plates

The initail erection of street name plates on new developments is the responsibility of the site developer. Subsequent repair and replacement is then carried out by the District Council through its contractor.

The sole purpose of a street name plate is to identify the street where you live and is non-directional. A street name plate has to be used in conjunction with clearly visible property numbering.
