HDC Reaches A Milestone Or Two

Huntingdonshire District Council’s conservation team have carried out repairs to two grade II listed milestones in Spaldwick and Great Gransden.

Milestones were once a common site along Britain’s roads, but in recent years many have been lost as part of road improvement schemes. Huntingdonshire, with its many historic routes has a high number of milestones, many of which are in need of regular maintenance and repair.

Both of the milestones had been on the district council’s Buildings at Risk (BaR) register, as they were in poor condition, and in the case of the Spaldwick milestone hidden away from public viewing. The repair works carried out have improved their condition, made them visible from the public highway and secured their long-term preservation.

Councillor Nick Guyatt, Executive Councillor for Conservation said: “It is important to maintain items from the past for future generations to enjoy. We rarely appreciate the value of milestones until they are lost or too late to address, so it is important to maintain milestones, securing their long term preservation.”

The works were carried out using section 57 funding, with the expertise of local contractors Fairhurst Ward Abbotts (based in Ellington) and the assistance of both parish council’s and the Milestone Society.
