Why Walking is Important
Research has indicated that, 8 out of 10 women and 7 out of 10 men do not do enough exercise to benefit their health.
The current recommendation for physical activity for Adults (19-64 years old) and older people (65+) is just 150mins – two and half hours – each week of moderate activity, such as brisk walking. That's all it takes to feel the difference. (Muscle strengthening activity should also be included twice a week.) (Department of Health Guidelines 2011)
Why is walking the perfect activity for health?
- Almost everyone can do it
- You can do it anywhere and any time
- It's a chance to make new friends
- It's free and you don't need special equipment
- You can start slowly and build up gently
Brisk walking is best but if you are unfit or have taken very little exercise recently then gentle strolling is a good start. It is better to start slowly and build up to walking faster rather than overdoing things at the beginning.
Brisk walking is the goal because the heart reaches its natural "training zone" when it has to work a little harder than normal.
Benefits of Walking:
- Make you feel good
- Give you more energy
- Reduce stress and help you sleep better
- Keep your heart 'strong' and reduce blood pressure
- Help to manage your weight
The right walking speed for you will depend on your gender, age and fitness.
