Volunteer Walk Leaders 

Walk leaders are crucial to the success of the scheme and are responsible for leading the group, providing encouragement and information to walkers.

What makes a good volunteer walk leader?

  • Observant - being able to recognise / reporting risks or hazards.
  • Enthusiastic - have an understanding of the Walking the Way to Health Scheme and the associated health benefits of walking
  • Punctual and reliable
  • Patient - this is particularly important for back marker walk leaders who need to motivate the slower walkers
  • Good organisational and communication skills
  • Approachable

The Huntingdonshire Health Walk Leaders are volunteers who receive certified training, first aid training, insurance cover and the opportunity to become an active member of the local scheme.

The benefits of becoming a ‘Volunteer Walk Leader'

  • Satisfaction in helping others to access and enjoy the benefits of walking
  • Receive one day free 'Health Walk leader training' course which includes, the benefits and barriers of exercise, components of a walking session, physical activity needs and special conditions, leading a walk and health and safety
  • Resources to assist with 'health walks' - fluorescent tabards, rucksack and first aid kit.
