Exercise Referral Scheme
What is Exercise Referral?
The exercise referral scheme has been helping people become fitter and more active for more than ten years. There are currently over 180 Health Professionals (GP’s, physiotherapists, nurses, occupational therapists) from 70 agencies (surgeries, hospitals, residential homes, clinics) registered to refer people to the District’s Leisure Centres.
The scheme is funded by Huntingdonshire District Council and Cambridgeshire Primary Care Trust to help improve the health of the community, promote active healthy lifestyles and help decrease sedentary-related illnesses.
Who is it for?
For people who will benefit from exercise to help in rehabilitation and prevention of certain medical conditions. For example:
- Heart Conditions
- Diabetes (Type 1 & 2)
- High Blood Pressure
- Depression/Anxiety
- Obesity
- Asthma

How does it work?
Registered Health Professionals can refer individuals who will benefit from a personalised 12 week exercise programme. The exercise programmes are designed to meet the needs of the individual and may include gym based exercises, walking, swimming, exercise classes, cycling and other activities.
What does it cost?
The initial consultation and exercise instruction (1 - 2 hours) costs £22.50 including a Technogym Wellness key payable on booking. Each exercise session during the 12 weeks costs just £3.00.
