Disability Play Schemes

Throughout Autumn 2008 the service users of the Huntingdon Community Centre have been taking part in a new play scheme called "MiPlay" directly focused on providing new activities suited to their needs.

"MiPlay" aims to increase the frequency of the service users participating in physical activity, using a variety of play equipment such as 'soft play', dominoes, giant jenga, snakes and ladders, and many more, with a rotational sporting activity such as boccia, new age kurling, or tri-golf.

The participants are encouraged to play without help, thus aiming to enhance the opportunities for the participants to play creatively and thus develop through MiPlay. In this way it begins to develop the carer’s relationship with the participant in that they are to provide opportunities for the individual to achieve his or her full potential whist not controlling the participant’s direction or choice.

The success of these sessions has been overwhelming, shown through the positive responses of the service users developing both mentally, and physically.

As a result, the scheme has now expanded to accommodate a group of service users in St Ives, having attracted over 30 participants at the two sites.
