Housing Strategy

The Council produces a Housing Strategy document in order to:

• set out the housing issues facing the district.
• set out how the Council wants to work in partnership with others to meet identified need.
• help direct service plans and support funding bids.

The document is the subject of consultation with the public, partners and Councillors. The related action plan is used to drive service plans and is monitored and updated regularly.

The Council’s strategic priorities for housing as set out in the Housing Strategy 2006-11 are:

• Appropriate New Housing
• Sufficient Affordable Housing
• Well Maintained Housing Stock
• Opportunities for the Vulnerable to Live Independently
• A Low Level of Homelessness

For more information please download the document.

Since then, the Council has decided to focus on fewer corporate priorities. Those that impact on housing are:

• Prevent and deal with homelessness
• Help vulnerable and disadvantaged people to live independently
• Encourage new jobs homes and facilities to meet our needs
• Safeguard the environment and successfully manage the impacts of growth
