The Alconburys
North-west of Huntingdon are the villages, almost running into each other, of Alconbury and Alconbury Weston extending along the banks of the meandering Alconbury Brook across whose shallow little valley the busy A1(M) now cleaves its way clear of Huntingdon. In both villages the brook is spanned by a medieval bridge; a hump-backed structure at Alconbury and a platform structure at Weston. Alconbury's church is a splendid Early English building and earned itself undying fame when, in the 19th Century, its spire was propped up with scaffolding whilst the tower beneath was successfully rebuilt! Local social life revolves around the Sports and Social Club with its playing field and premises together with the village and school halls at Alconbury - the larger of the two communities.
There is a late 18th Century (limestone) milestone located between the A1(M) and the local road at Alconbury Hill.
