Holme

Holme is now a village of new estates integrated within the old village.  Church Street has a mixture of former Estate cottages and modern houses.  The school and the village hall are the local social centres.

The Admiral Wells is the only Public House, situated near the main railway line. The Church, largely rebuilt in 1862, is unusual for its double dovecote.  Holme once a farming community is now a dormitory village with its easy access to the main A1(M).

Over the mainline railway to the east of the village is a large Nature Reserve, now managed by English Nature.  This contains the famous Holme Fen Post, a huge cast iron column which was driven into the peat by William Wells in 1851 when the top was at ground level.

Over the years the peat has shrunk to such an extent that the post is now some thirteen feet out of the ground.  The post, which was thought to have come from the Crystal Palace Exhibition Hall, is now a Grade II listed structure.
