Shop Local
Huntingdonshire District Council is encouraging residents to use their local shops to support local businesses, boost the local economy and help tackle climate change.
The Council is keen to point out that that local shopping is not more expensive or offers less choice. On the contrary, shopping locally can be the most eco-friendly option, while helping to keep your own communities vibrant and alive.
Many small shops across the country are struggling to survive due to the current economic climate and although Huntingdonshire is faring better than most of the country we still need to support these shops to ensure their survival. The council wants to make sure that the district’s high streets and town centres remain the vibrant and are keen to promote the benefits of small shops.
The benefits of shopping locally are:
- Local shops are more likely to provide local food that hasn't been flown halfway across the world
- Local shops offer a much more personal service than big supermarkets
- Local shops keep money circulating in the local area so they support other local businesses
- Local shops and street markets often offer better value for fresh fruit and vegetables
- Local shops are more energy efficient than huge superstores
- A diverse range of local shops provides more choice than one big supermarket.
